By Bob Lord
Here at PARMA we devote a hefty amount of time to working on, listening to, and thinking and speaking about the projects we curate. Hey, it’s our job! We want as many people as possible to be introduced to the artists whose music we’ve produced – and we think for good reason.
Yet there’s an endless amount of truly superb music released every day, from every corner of the globe, across every style imaginable, that has absolutely nothing to do with us whatsoever. As a team and as individuals we are all exploring new music (or, at least, music new to us) continuously and discovering sounds that we truly enjoy, and I believe we ought to tell you about that too.
After all, that’s how many of us got into this, and got into new music of all types, isn’t it? Hearing something totally fresh and bold on a buddy’s boom box, or something classic and nostalgic on your grandparent’s record player, or a mysterious few notes as you pass through the dial on the car stereo, an experience that simply takes you as a listener – no matter your chosen field, regardless of whether you interact with music for work or pleasure or both – and commands your attention.
Here’s what’s on rotation over at PARMA headquarters. – Bob Lord, CEO PARMA Recordings

My Time Is Now
Haerim Elizabeth Lee (violin), Alex Brown (piano)
innova Recordings
The first recording of George Gershwin’s personal Steinway piano since its restoration, powered by Lee’s lush-yet-crisp sound. I’ve always enjoyed Zwilich’s work, and her “Fantasy” on this release is a sparkler (apologies to Bob Ross).

Max Richter

I remember hearing his Vivaldi for the first time in the office and saying, OH MAN WHY DIDN’T WE DO THAT. Always the greatest/worst feeling. In some ways this soundtrack is less of a unified statement than much of his other work, but the variety of texture and expression here is, to me, potent.

ACQUIRING THE TASTE
Gentle Giant
Vertigo/Repertoire
Where would we be without prog-rock? Actually, I probably shouldn’t ask that. Forget the capes, never mind the curries, Gentle Giant was one of the few groups who played both hard and smart. A secret favorite of many PARMA composers and artists over the years, but I won’t name names. Ahem.

HAVE A LITTLE FAITH
Bill Frisell
Nonesuch
Quintessential music played in quintessentially Frisellian fashion. One of my favorite records since the day I heard it, and every time a new Frisell album drops (such as last year’s excellent HARMONY on Blue Note) I’m reminded of when I fell for that fine sound in the first place.

SHOCK TREATMENT
Don Ellis
Columbia Records/Sony
By the time this album came out, Ellis had foregone any sense of trying to temper his urge to fuse his artistic and commercial senses. I’m sure collaborators from his early years in Boston and on the East Coast heard this and shook their heads, but Ellis didn’t give a damn. He was blasting off into the cosmos.

TACHITIPO
Zosha Di Castri
New Focus Recordings
The expansive, glacial, tectonic structure of this record, with its peaks and valleys of instrumentation and content, at each moment sounding completely singular yet resonating across the whole, is one of the most striking I’ve heard in recent memory. “String Quartet No. 1” makes me feel like the guy in the Maxell tape ad.
