What do you get when you pair a GRAMMY®-winning production team with a sharp-dressed string quartet and a diverse suite of contemporary classical music? QUADRANTS VOL. 5, the recent visual album release from the Benda Quartet and Navona Records, is a prime example.

Originally an Apple Music exclusive, the visual component of QUADRANTS VOL. 5 became more widely available via YouTube on February 19th. Eloquent, precise, and hypnotic, this program is a crystal-clear reflection of the musical and technical heights of the string quartet genre.

The award-winning Benda Quartet assembles on this program to deliver a stunning, razor-sharp collection of contemporary string works. Composers Christopher J. Hoh, Ferdinando DeSena, Christopher Brakel, Michael Murray, and Paul Halley offer a wide range of sounds and emotions in this body of work, ranging from warm, elegant expressions to high-octane passages and more.

On The Program:

  • Christopher Hoh’s Let Tyrants Shake, based on the American Revolutionary War poem “Chester” by William Billings

  • Ferdinando DeSena’s String Quartet No. 2, based on what he believes are the three great principles of human behavior: Action, Integrity, and Humility

  • Christopher Brakel’s Word Shadows, inspired by several poems of Paul Celan (1920–1970)

  • Michael Murray’s The Darkening Green, inspired by William Blake’s poem “The Echoing Green” from his Songs of Innocence (1789)

  • Paul Halley’s String Quartet No. 2, Winter, the first of Paul Halley’s string quartet series The Seasons, captures the feelings of winter with 3 minor key movements

The PARMA production team saw it differently. To them, it was the perfect site to film the video component of this visual album.
