Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava

The Janáček Philharmonic, based in Ostrava, is one of the leading symphony orchestras in the Czech Republic. The result of long-established traditions within this orchestra, its Bohemian sound and progressive repertoire are held in the highest esteem by local and international audiences and critics. The orchestra’s excellence shines especially in its ability to flawlessly perform not only Janáček but also an extensive repertoire comprising most Late Romantic to contemporary pieces including those by Suk, Mahler, Bartok, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Instrumentation

Composers are invited to submit works for full orchestra or smaller orchestral subsets. The Janáček Philharmonic’s flexibility allows for a range of instrumentation, making this an excellent opportunity for orchestral composers across various styles and formats.

“The Janáček Philharmonic recorded my piece with wonderful precision and expressiveness. As a former record producer, I also fully appreciated how professional the orchestra, conductor, and sound engineers were during the entire process. They were very attentive to my input as the composer.”

Erich Stem

“I think it was all fantastic! Jan was so on top of everything; he was not only attentive to any concerns or comments I had, but he also often already had the same thoughts I had and was in the process of addressing them before I mentioned it. The group sounded amazing and was responsive to all of our feedback.”

Jan Van der Roost

“We had a very pleasant and fruitful recording session yesterday with Jan in charge in Ostrava … I did not miss one note of the session and we could finish relaxedly in time. Conductor and players gave their best to make my notes sound well and I am in high spirits with the result.”

“I was very pleased with how the sessions went and were conducted. Jan made it really easy for me, and Karel, Stanislav, and the orchestra were just amazing! That concerto is one of the most difficult things that I have written, and everyone took it in stride very professionally and worked efficiently.”

“The recording sessions went very well. … It was a beautiful collaboration – real teamwork towards a common goal. The Janacek Philharmonic and conductor Stanislaw Vavrinek didn’t treat my music like just another recording gig. They really sank their teeth into the music and brought it to life.“
