Pairing today’s leading performers of classical music with the deeply-creative voices of contemporary composers is a surefire way to produce a remarkable album. Take that same combination to the concert stage at Carnegie Hall, and the sky is the limit.
Flutist Lindsey Goodaman pianist Clare Longendyke did just that with IN THE COMPANY OF MUSIC on January 24, and their electrifying Friday-night performance of chamber works by several contemporary composers was met with a thunderous applause.
Friday Night in Weill Recital Hall
Released as a digital album on Navona Records in Fall 2024, IN THE COMPANY OF MUSIC’s program showcases the breadth of compositional styles in which the flute and piano can shine, exploring traditional expressions, the avant garde, and everywhere in between.
Spanning evocative miniatures to pensive, multi-movement works, these pieces are remarkably diverse, and so are the inspirations behind them — from major events in human history to pure musical curiosity and more.
A wide range of celebrated artists representing the finest of every genre have filled Carnegie Hall throughout the years. For many composers and performers in the classical community, sharing their music at the historic venue represents a milestone achievement.
“This night will live in my heart forever,” said Goodman, following the concert.
“If I could gift wrap the experience of playing Carnegie Hall to a sold out house including family, friends who are like family, treasured colleagues from every aspect of your life, former students, and happy composers and their entourages, and then getting three curtain calls with a cheering standing ovation, I would immediately give it to everyone I know.”
– Lindsey Goodman, flutist
Just as the performance had a profound effect on Goodman, so did it on several of the program’s composers who were in attendance.
“We were overwhelmed by what we saw and heard last night, I cannot recall any artistic experience we’ve had in the past while both listening to and reacting to the originality and expressivity of such an artistic experience. I shall long remember and be grateful to all who submitted what I received.”
– Allen Brings, composer
