For many, January is synonymous with new beginnings. As a fresh new year commences, we are inspired by new goals, resolutions, and a drive to make each year better than the last. With that comes the year’s first releases from Navona and Ravello Records, featuring an ecoacoustic collection of glacier music, the results of budding friendships between performers and composers, and much more.
Discover new music from Phillip Chase Hawkins, Omar Carmenates, John Psathas, Bonifantes Boys Choir, Jan Jirásek, Paul Lombardi, Matthew Burtner, and more.
JANUARY RELEASES OUT NOW
GREAT SOUTHERN LAND
Phillip Chase Hawkins
On GREAT SOUTHERN LAND, Phillip Chase Hawkins’ debut album, a unique symbiosis exists between the trumpeter and renowned composer Brendan Collins. The result of their cross-continental collaboration showcases Hawkins’ virtuosity in both duo and trio settings.
THE JOHN PSATHAS PERCUSSION PROJECT VOL. 1
Omar Carmenates; John Psathas
THE JOHN PSATHAS PERCUSSION PROJECT VOL. 1 is percussionist Omar Carmenates’ recorded interpretation of the work of the Greek New Zealand composer John Psathas and is his first release on Navona Records. The album is the result of an expansive, multi-year collaboration with a mission to reimagine works from Psathas’ compositional oeuvre entirely for percussion instruments.
WHEN THE SOUL SPEAKS
Jan Míšek; Jan Jirásek; Bonifantes Boys Choir; Czech Soloist Consort
WHEN THE SOUL SPEAKS paradoxically presents music of ancient texts through some of the present day’s youngest voices. Performed by the Bonifantes Boys’ Choir and the Czech Soloist Consort, these sacred texts rise to life through the performances of one of the Czech Republic’s most acclaimed ensembles.
PIECES OF MIND & MATTER
Paul Lombardi
Contrary to the popular belief which likes to separate the emotional from the logical, few things go together as well as music and mathematics. With PIECES OF MIND AND MATTER, South-Dakota-based music professor and composer Paul Lombardi has taken it upon himself to render this intricate relation audible and accessible to audiences – all while chronicling his personal musical journey.
GLACIER MUSIC
Matthew Burner
Glaciers represent some of the most striking examples of nature’s power and artistry, while simultaneously revealing the impact of mankind’s actions. With electroacoustic compositions recorded on top of melting glaciers, Matthew Burtner’s GLACIER MUSIC makes the issue unavoidable: while we converse and debate over climate change, iconic pieces of natural history are slipping away.
