When starting this piece, my initial idea was to create a ‘pulseless’ sound mass from which fragmentary melodic material and harmony emerge. This happens at the very beginning and the material (whether melodic, harmonic or rhythmic) that is created from this is what I used to construct the body of the piece. The reoccurring material and ideas are presented at a pace in which the dynamics, texture and atmosphere are ever changing yet held together by harmonic structures and rhythmic motives. To me, the process of writing an orchestral piece, was about exploring new textures and colours and using the full potential and energy this body of instruments holds. The title ‘stony mountains to rise’ was taken from Ovidius’ Metamorphoses and represents the idea of creating something of a larger scale or structure.
