The Black Hole is an object in the universe (or to quote Wikipedia: “a region of spacetime”) with such an enormous gravity, that nothing, not even light can escape it. In piece Black Hole I expressed my fascination towards this objects and their mystery.
The piece describes “imaginary” journey to (and from) the Black Hole. First part (measures 1 – 91) represents a journey TOWARDS it. We feel extreme gravity with a very aggressive gravitational force (in composition this gravitational force is represented by the continuous flow of music and rhythms, which is always moving forward. The sound is very loud and aggressive with dissonant chords). The place, that we are going is to us unknown and very scary (the first part is written in a chaotic polymetrical manner, so it is very hard to figure out the “first beat”; there is however rhythmical motif present throughout the first part).
Second part (measures 92 – 120) is a moment INSIDE the Black Hole. Nobody knows, what happens to the laws of physics inside, but this is my interpretation: very calm, beautiful and bright place (in the piece it is written in a polytonal or quasi-‐tonal compositional language, with a instrumentation selection of only few instruments solo).
Although not very likely, but there is a theory, that every Black Hole has a twin White Hole, that are connected with a Warm Hole. So everything, that gets pulled into the Black Hole, gets spat out by the White Hole. The third part is a journey OUT! The character is similar to the first part (for example the starting melody of measures 1 and 2 is repeated in measures 178 – 180, the motif from percussions in first part is repeated also in second part), however, we already know, where we have been and what we experienced, so this journey out is not so chaotic (also the music itself seems to be more organized, yet still aggressive).
The mystery of the Black Hole and the whole experience is expressed also in the last measure, where on one hand there is a kind of tonic (first degree) note (a), played by timpani, harp and piano, on the other hand the strings are playing a tone cluster.
