Liza White
Described by various critics as "visceral", "rhythmically vibrant", "inventive", "vivid", "melodically incisive", and "ever surprising", Liza White's music serves ideals of direct, focused and socially relevant expression. White has worked with some of the world's finest musicians, including Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble SIGNAL, the JACK Quartet, Ensemble Dal Niente, Fulcrum Point New Music Ensemble, Fifth House Ensemble, Present Music, ALEAIII, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble and the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Her work has been featured at top venues and festivals including REDCAT, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, June in Buffalo, and the Composers’ Conference at Wellesley College and has won numerous awards, including the Craig and Janet Swan Prize, the Margaret Blackburn Composition Competition, an Emil and Ruth Beyer Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Dolce Suono Ensemble Young Composer Competition, the North American Saxophone Alliance Composition Competition, and the American Prize. Recently, her piece Zin zin zin zin was recorded by the Spektral Quartet on the album Chambers, to critical acclaim from the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Reader, and New Music Box, among other publications.
Liza lives in Chicago and is pursuing a doctorate degree in composition at Northwestern University (2011-present, music.northwestern.edu). She has also studied at Boston University (B.Mus 2006, bu.edu/cfa/music/), the New England Conservatory (M.Mus 2008, necmusic.edu), and UC Berkeley (in PhD program 2009-11, music.berkeley.edu). Liza is a lecturer at Northwestern and is Music Theory and Composition Department Chair at the Merit School of Music.
